20 Questiones (Tame Antelope Remix)

Let’s have another go at this. I’m taking it a little more seriously this time.

1. Which bands/artist do you have the most albums by?
Eraserheads—I have all of their 8 albums.

2. What was the last song you listened to?
“I Would Hurt a Fly”, by Built to Spill.

3. The first album you bought?
Pearl Jam’s Live On Two Legs, cassette. On CD that would be Sponge Cola’s Palabas. But that’s only because I couldn’t find any Nirvana (out of stock) or Eraserheads CD’s (out of print) at the time.

4. What was the last concert you attended?
I’ve seen a few gigs–more or less five, but I’ve been to a concert only thrice. The last one was Eraserheads’ Reunion concert.

5. Your first concert?
It was this huge concert in PICC. There were thousands of people. And the band played “Alive”—no, not the Pearl Jam song. It’s one that goes “Alive, alive, alive forevermore, my chezzus is alive forevermore”… it’s one of those religious gatherings led by Mike Velarde. Jk.

I used to think it’s either that one night in Saguijo or that mall show by Pupil but I was wrong. Those were gigs not concert. It was this concert we organized back in college with probably more than 20 local unsigned bands slated to play in one night. It was a blast watching those bands.

6. Have you been to festivals?
I’ve been to one—don’t remember which festival it was. What I remember is that there were scattered rain showers. It was still drizzling when we went to this stage where Radioactive Sago Project was set to play. And then while Lourd de Veyra and the band was in the middle of “Gusto Ko Ng Baboy”, the canvas roof of the stage suddenly collapsed due to the water caught in it and so abruptly and effectively ended the show for that evening.

7. What’s the most musically involved you’ve ever been?
I play guitar in a band at the office. And we occasionally embarrass ourselves in front of many during company events and parties.

8. Band/artist you’ve never seen live but always wanted to?
Honestly, none. I’m already happy if I could see them on YouTube.

9. What is your favorite band shirt?
That would be my Monsterbot shirt with a print of Rhomboids album cover on the front. Technically not a band shirt but I also have this red Che Guevara shirt. When I was in Vietnam, I bought this red shirt with that yellow hammer-sickle symbol on it. Afraid that I wouldn’t be able to wear it after 2016 happened, I decided to just give it away before I left.

10. Musician you would like to hang out with for a day?
That’s highly unlikely. But I’m happy whenever I found some Stephen Malkmus interview on YouTube, whether it’s recent or old. Like this Overrated/Underrated thing from Pitchfork. I love his answer about genetics.

11. Musician or group you wish would make a comeback?
No one. But I wish the guys from Narda would make their songs, albums, EPs available on Bandcamp.

(Edit: Drafted this few weeks ago, wasn’t really rushing to post it. Then, great news came the other day. Remastered version of Narda’s first EP A Postcard from is now available on Spotify. Soon the other EPs will follow and hopefully they’d be available on Bandcamp too.)

12. Name four or more flawless albums.
Vive La Difference! – Eggstone
It’s Not Easy Being Green – Rivermaya
OK Computer – Radiohead
Begin to Hope – Regina Spektor
The Friend I Once Had – Club 8

13. How many music related videos/DVDs do you own?
Matira Matibay – Parokya Ni Edgar
Slow Century – Pavement
Live at Reading – Nirvana
MTV Unplugged In New York – Nirvana
Live at the Astoria – Radiohead
7 Television Commercials – Radiohead
Meeting People Is Easy – Radiohead
The Complete Sessions at West 54th – Ben Folds Five

14. Your favorite movie soundtrack?
“There’s Something About Mary”, “Way Back Into Love”, I am Sam OST

15. What song introduced you to a new genre?
Green Day’s “When I Come Around”.

16. What do you think about TV and Movie Soundtracks?
Songs can make movie scenes more memorable. Some songs could convey a particular mood that enhances a scene or sequence in a film. Jet’s “Hold On” for me, did that for Spider-Man 2, that scene where Tobey Maguire has to choose what to wear, to be either Spider-Man or just Peter Parker. The songs lyrics doesn’t really jive with that scene but the music does.

17. Do you choose particular albums depending on the mood?
Sometimes. My Bloody Valentine.

18. Have you ever met a singer or band member personally? Were you impressed?
I met Katwo Librando and some members of Narda in Saguijo once. Before their set, I asked them to sign my CD. Katwo signed my Formika CD and it was like that song by The Cure.

19. The old days of music were the better ones. Do you agree?
I don’t. Every era has its share of shit and gold.

20. Have you ever seen a band live and regretted it? Which one?
I regretted every night I stayed up late just to see those bands. I regretted that I had to travel far, stay up late, get half-drunk and hungry, not get laid after, wake up alone the next day and realize that I have work and I’m still single. Not to mention, the degree of damaged they had on my liver.

I mean, isn’t drinking beer while watching live videos on YouTube just more fun?

I kind of miss Narda though.
